See Carter, dress smarter!
Percy Carter came to Canada in 1913 from England. In his search for work he landed in Simcoe, and began working at Brook Men’s Clothing Store.
When the owner of Brook Men’s Clothing Store passed away in 1927, it was sold to another party. With a bit of determination and a bit of luck Percy was able to open his own store, then know as Carter and Son’s, located at 12 Norfolk St. S., now Erie Music.
In the 1930’s the store moved to its’ current location at 42 Norfolk St S. In addition to his son Harry, several family members, Ethel, Eva and Lloy, all worked in the store with Percy. In 1937 Herb Carter, affectionately known as Herbie, started working in the store. After a stint with the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII, Herb returned to the store where he continued to work with Percy, and his brother Harry.
In 1957, Percy sold the business to Herb and Harry but remained on the payroll.
In 1976 Harry passed away. Herb became the sole owner of Carter’s and in 1991 he turned the business over to his son Cam, the 3rd generation of Carter’s to continue Percy’s legacy.Cam & his wife Rose continue the Carter tradition of serving Norfolk County with quality service and clothing.
This continues to be the mission after 90 years of service.
